Halloween is absolutely one of my FAVORITE holidays and to celebrate I pulled together the creative minds of some of my talented blogging friends to bring you over 110 fabulous Halloween ideas! From costumes to parties, crafts and home decor, recipes and free printables, we have so many fun ideas to share! I guarantee you’ll find a project (or 10!) that you would love to incorporate into your Halloween festivities. All week (Monday through Saturday) myself and my blogging friends will be sharing our fun creations with all of you. Each day will include approximately 20 Halloween projects and you can “hop” from one blog to another to check them all out.
I was looking for an easy way to add a little fall to my porch last weekend and one of my favorite things to do is shop my own house for things that can be repurposed into fun decor items. I had some stained 2×4’s left over from this project and it got my wheels turning. Originally I was going to make some fabric covered pumpkins, but because we get so much rain anything I put outside has a pretty good chance of getting moldy and/or mildewy. I decided that instead I was going to paint my pumpkins.
The first thing I did was grab some washi tape and start laying out my designs. I knew that I wanted them to be simple enough that I wasn’t going to lose my mind trying to paint them and yet detailed enough to make an impact. I decided to do two of my “pumpkins” with diagonal stripes and to make my third one a sort of herringbone design. I eyeballed tape placement and grabbed some paints.
The first striped pumpkin I painted with a cream colored paint, and the second I painted with a pumpkin orange. The tall herringbone pumpkin I decided to create an ombre effect. I grabbed a mid range orange and poured some of each of the three colors onto a paper plate. I started with the top spot and painted it the cream color, I painted the middle spot with the mid range orange and the bottom spot with the darker pumpkin orange. Then I mixed a little of the middle orange in with the dark orange on the plate and painted the second from bottom spot. Then I mixed a little more of the mid range orange in with that and painted the next spot up. I repeated this process for the top mixing a little of the cream in with the middle orange color and painting the next spot up and then added even more of the cream and painted the last remaining spot. Lastly, I went back over the middle stripe with a very bright green.
Once I had all the spaced painted I went back and started peeling all the tape off. I was really careful and tried to peel at an angle so that I would get nice clean, crisp lines. It sort of worked. You can see that some of my lines are a little less perfect than others, but I kind of like it that way. I don’t necessarily want all of my projects to look like they came from a store, I like the imperfect look.
I let the paint dry overnight and came back the next day and added a fake leaf or two from some dollar store fake flowers I had lying around from other projects. I simple stuck a flat tack into the left attaching it to the wood. I moved some of my old flowers off my wooden crate on our front porch and instantly had a little more seasonal flair in my decor. I absolutely love the way the herringbone pumpkin turned out and I might go back and make a few more of those ones to beef up my display. For now though, I am in love with it just how it is!
