The first thing I did was pick out some fabric scraps for each of my kids. I have a ton of remnants and large scraps in my collection. I chose a pretty princess fleece for my girls and a fun super hero one for my son. I decided to cut them into rectangles so I would only have to sew three sides (my sewing skills are pretty weak). First cut all of your fabric into 7″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles, then fold them in half to end up with 3 1/2″ squares.
Lay them down with right sides together and begin sewing. Make sure to leave a 1″ opening so you can add the rice when it is time. Once they are sewn most of the way around, flip them right side out through the hole you left and carefully add the rice. As crazy as it sounds I don’t own a funnel so I cut a small corner of of a bag of rice (from the dollar store) and poured it directly into the pouch.
Once the rice has been added fold the raw edges inside and sew the whole thing shut. It is as simple as sewing a straight line through the opening. Repeat this process for all your squares and in about 10 minutes you will have a few sets of hand warmers. To use them, simply put them in the microwave for no more than 30 seconds. They should stay warm for about 20 minutes and are really nice treat on those extra cold days! Bonus- you can also throw these in the freezer and use them as soft ice packs perfect for little owies!

I love these, however I’ve found that once warmed up the fleece seams wet or sweaty. Any solutions?
