Welcome back to another easy gift Wednesday. I know I say this every week, but this week I am for real. This might be my favorite project of all time and I’ll tell you why. I love glittery things. I also love easy projects. And I love things that are pretty and don’t require a lot of maintenance. This week’s craft meets all those criteria and then some! I received this box of glitter from the Recollections line exclusively at Michael’s a few weeks ago. I was immediately impressed by both the high quality of the glitter and the amazing variety they carry. They have a huge range of colors and textures (very fine, chunky and tinsel) and you can buy them individually or in sets starting at only $3.99! I was immediately drawn to the very fine glitter in a cool blue.
I was playing around with a few different ideas for this glitter when like a flash of lightning it hit me. I had been seeing sharpie mugs all over Pinterest and I really wanted to make a one, but I hate feeling like a copy cat. That’s when it hit me. What if I could make a personalized mug using glitter…. Turns out not only is this a possibility, but with the different kinds of glitter Michael’s carries the possibilities are endless! I chose to do a heart with the tinsel glitter in a shimmery ice blue and the word “love” in that original cool blue very fine glitter.
I just happened to have a couple of plain mugs from the dollar store laying around (don’t ask), and so I gave them a quick rub down with some rubbing alcohol to help the glitter adhere better. I used my Slice machine to cut out the heart and the word from contact paper and then stuck them onto the mug. Because the mug was tapered I had to cut my contact paper a little bit to help them lay flat. I spread a thin layer of some durable gloss finish onto the mug and got to sprinkling my glitter.
The glitter poured out so easily from the container and looked beautiful immediately! I did the side with the heart first, shaking the excess glitter off the mug gently making sure not to actually touch it. To shake the excess glitter off I gently tapped the side of the mug. I made sure to do the actual pouring and the gentle tapping over a piece of paper so I could return the unused glitter back to the container. I repeated the same process on the other side and then set them out to dry overnight. I also shared this picture on Instagram, because I was already in love with what was happening.
The next day I applied a second coat of the durable gloss finish over my glitter making sure to dab it on and not spread it around at all. Then I let it dry overnight again. At this point my mug was ready to use and completely safe for hand washing. However, this wasn’t good enough for me. I don’t hand wash dishes. I have three kids and cook 3+ meals a day. My dishwasher is my best friend most days, okay, everyday. I wanted this mug to be able to use this mug and abuse this mug the same as I would any other cup in my cupboard. Luckily, if I let these bad boys cure for 28 days (oh my goodness this feels like forever) they will be dishwasher safe! Yes, you heard me correctly, dishwasher safe.
See what I mean, this might be the best project ever! These mugs are so easy to create, personalize and make for that special someone in your life. Or for that hard to shop for co-worker. Or keep for yourself to add a little something extra special to your morning/afternoon/evening/late night. The options are endless. All I know is that I have used a lot of different glitters in my life and this glitter is the bomb dot com. Promise. Now go get some glitter and get busy making a mug! Then come back here and share your creations with me so we can all revel in the glittery goodness.
